Nieves Drives In Three as Mobiles Battle Long Beach Regulators
Hector Nieves homers and adds a late RBI single in RedPocket’s 6–3 loss
LONG BEACH, Calif. — The RedPocket Mobiles kept themselves within striking distance Friday night against the Long Beach Regulators, but a pair of early Long Beach rallies proved to be the difference in a 6–3 loss. The Coast scored once in the first and again in the second before RedPocket answered in the third, when Hector Nieves delivered the biggest swing of his Mobiles season so far. Nieves launched a two-run home run, scoring Maury Weaver and tying the game at 2–2.
Long Beach responded quickly in the bottom of the third, using an Emilio Corona two-run double and a Paul Winland RBI single to move back in front, 5–2. The Regulators added one more run in the fifth on a Jacob Jablonski sacrifice fly, but RedPocket's bullpen helped keep the game from getting away. Ubaldo Romo worked 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, and Wyatt Adams followed with a clean eighth, striking out two while holding Long Beach hitless.
Nieves came through again in the seventh, singling home Weaver to cut the deficit to 6–3 and finish the night with all three RedPocket RBIs. Gianni Horvat reached base four times with two hits, two walks, and two stolen bases, while Weaver scored twice and stole three bases. The Mobiles did not get the final push they needed, but Nieves' breakout night, Horvat's continued table-setting, Weaver's pressure on the bases, and strong late relief gave RedPocket positives to carry into the rest of the series.
